The new Shan Foods ad is out and is going viral over the internet because of the super unique concept is holds. That 3-minute ad revolves around the story of a Chinese woman who has moved to Lahore with her husband and is finding it difficult to adjust with Pakistanis because of the entirely different social patterns and cultural trends.
The ad starts when the Chine lady longs for befriending the other women from her neighborhood when his husband suggests him to stop staying alone twenty-four and start making friends by interacting them. And the reason she gives was kind of valid as it happens with everyone who-so-ever go and settles to quite a new place, around new people with new mindsets and social forms.
Chinese woman gave the reason that befriending here will not be easy as our food is not the same. That’s where the importance of food is shown by Shan Foods, and that’s true to a major extent that when the food is different, how can one find some better chance to sit and interact? Her reason was quite the real and obvious one.

Suddenly, an idea popped up into her mind when she says her husband to drop her to the supermarket, and meanwhile, in the way, she kept googling about one of the most favorite Pakistani foods, and it was no other than “BIRYANI”. And yes, we all admit it! The woman stops and picks up the Shan Biryani Masala, comes back home, follow the recipe and cooks biryani.
While leaving her place, it is shown that she also covers her head. That what our norms and social patterns are, which are shown beautifully by this advertisement. If you wish to befriend someone, the way you carry yourself should be similar, and then comes the food that you are going to share. Dressing like a typical Pakistani woman, covering her head, shows how much our society is into such thing that one will be only accepted if one behaves, wears and eats like us. (Forget about the language thing here, that is on its least count).
The moment she takes biryani to the neighbor’s place, and greets them with “Assalamoalaikum”, this also shows, how one has to adopt the ‘ways-to-greet-when-you-meet’ for initiating any conversation with those who are living around you and are in majority. It’s you who has to adapt their patterns because you are the one from the minority.

And the ad moves ahead when the Pakistani lady who opens the door tastes biryani, then after loving the taste, takes the Chinese woman inside, almost screaming her lungs off “Ammi, daadi, saima, kitni achi biryani bnai hai hmari cheeni dost ne”. So here, the BIRYANI turned that Chinese women into a “dost” to Pakistanis. And then, whole the family cherishes the moment of BIRYANI-sharing, while Dadi, kisses her hand and ask the Chinese woman to keep coming to their place while asking her not to cry.
The advertisement sums up the Pakistani culture as well as Pak-China dosti in a really beautiful way while emphasizing the importance of “food”, as well as indirectly showing the worth of “Shan-masala”.

Many people found this ad annoying and senseless because they might be from those who are unaware of the worth of food and friendship. Being Pakistanis, we cannot neglect the importance of food, specially BIRYANI, as it holds a great part of our lives and surviving a week without it seems impossible to us, and when someone who offers us this, why would we not say YES to their friendship requests?
