Effect of ecommerce on business in Pakistan

Across the world, E-commerce has brought so many revolutions especially in the field of business and trading. E-commerce has brought ease with it and even for the entrepreneurs and consumers, helping them getting rid of the old trends of shopping through retailers and bringing them to this easy-to-handle kind of facility known as ‘e-commerce’.

It is observed that the growth of online shopping stores is rapidly increasing, making people more indulge in shopping over the internet than leaving their houses and shop. Many of the well-known firms are investing in a huge scale in e-commerce, as it is really beneficial. As reported by The World Bank, the percentage of people who use the internet in Pakistan has increased from 6.8% to 18% between the years 2007 and 2015. And in India, the internet users has increased from 3.95% to 26% in the same respective years.

The traders and manufacturers feel lucky as now they need not depend on retailers and they can set their distributions channels over the internet and can easily manage them by staying at their places.

The key happenings worth mentioning:

Online Banking: In the era of last 5 to 6 years, electronic banking, which is banking over the internet has greatly evolved and online transactions are increased. The people who use estimated banking has reached over 1.8 million, estimated by SBP. There were just 23 banks who provided the facility of online banking until the year 2012 and then in 2016 this facility was introduced in around 34 banks. Hence the e-commerce facility of banking kept increasing because people find it easier and less hectic.

Black Friday: Online portals for shopping were very few till 2015 but then in 2016, Black Friday was much bigger and people were more involved in it. All the previously made records were broken by e-commerce sites while generating revenues and earning noticeable profits. The well known, Daraz and Kaymu’s income crossed the line of 1 Billion and the Yayvo was exceeded with 60,000 orders during Black Friday. This e-commerce attractiveness and benefits has made many retailers set up their distribution systems online as it is easy to handle, manage and demands less effort, time and money. Through this e-commerce thing, people are not just shopping, banking but are also enjoying discounts and offers which are the reason for its rapid growth. It has been reported lately that Pakistan stands at 19th position out of 210 countries while having around 30 million users of the internet. But there is a flaw that there are no well-designed and properly established business dealing offices for e-commerce as they lack in infrastructure as well as the availability of internet is lacking in many places and people have no such sense to avail its benefits. In past few years, the startups usually offered food, clothing, electronics and the selling of rides but this traditional set up is gradually changing because of e-commerce and traders are adding up more and more things daily to keep their customers involved and busy with online shopping.
