It is a good thing to hope that the young generation, the backbone of a nation, the hope, the lifeblood of our society is leading our society to prosperity and development. How comfortable it is to believe that we are moving towards a better future, full of health and positive attitude towards life? Isn’t it a wonderful thinking?
But we have to look at the real face of life. Is our young generation this much passionate? Are they really working towards better Pakistan? Are they really realistic?
The answer to this question is very disappointing. Our young generation is vulnerable to many ethical stigmas. They have to take part in political issues, they have to engage in street-crimes, they have to follow much-appreciated love culture and those who are left without these dilemmas have to be indulged in substance abuse.
Most of the energies of our youth are going to these more important issues than to their academic struggle or career goals. The truth is Pakistan is moving towards peak of drug culture. The journey of drugs that started from Opium and Hashish has now entered in to an era of ecstasy pills and weed. And Pakistan is left behind no other country in variety of drugs its youth uses.
Recent surge in drug abuse has resulted from invasion of Western culture and globalization. The abuse has spread to all corners of country. Not only youth, rather older ones and those just about to enter in their teens are all victims of this culture. This upsurge in wrong behavior has affected all of them. Different socio-economical groups have access to different types of drugs. But all the same they make the similar concern.
From alcohol to LSD to marijuana and tar yak all drugs are easily available in Pakistan whether under covers openly. Different users welcome different classes of especially drugs built to match their individual tastes.
This is not the story of male sect of the society; rather female part is also a victim of this culture for decades. In drug choices one finds different varieties for boys and girls if one wants. Universities and colleges are specially affected by the culture. The prevailing drug culture in educational institutions raises question on use of drugs as de-stressors. Surely, young people adapt new behaviors in these institutions as fashion and not as a need.
There was a time when people used to blame drug addiction on stresses of life, on family issues and social injustice. But as Pakistani culture is moving towards liberalism this argument is left unsupported. Newer school of thought now argues that drug addiction is the result of imbalanced style of thinking. Youth’s anti-social thoughts and behaviors prompt them towards use of such substances.
In past the matter of taking drug was a matter of shame. This had put some restrictions on people’s use of drugs. However, with change of mindset and change of thinking style has made this matter a fashion a style. Who knows where this attitude of our youth would take them.
